Creating the Perfect Shower Experience

19 July 2021

For many of us a bathroom is a sanctuary. Moreover updating your bathroom, especially the wet area where daily cleaning takes place, increases the value of your home. Bathroom renovations typically offer one of the largest returns on investment of any home improvement project.

Your bathroom, your refuge

If you are like most people, your bathroom is a refuge where you can relax, unwind and forget about the day's troubles. Peace and relaxation are not the only motivating factors for turning an outdated, tired bathroom into a bright oasis though.

Walk-in luxury

Replacing your old bathtub with high walls, which you have to step over to enter, is a hot trend at the moment. As people age, though, stepping over a barrier can become difficult. This is why level or low threshold showers have gained a foothold in the industry, so to speak. Not only are showers becoming more popular, they are also becoming more airy - thanks to glass enclosures. From plain see-through glass to fancy etched doors, glass enclosed showers can really open up a bathroom - even if the space is small. Although the available space will dictate how many extras you can incorporate into your plan, the open design and functionality of these showers go a long way towards making your bathroom a paradise. Glass enclosed showers easily fit into the area of the tubs they replace, and they can include many luxurious elements that will give your bathroom a spa-like atmosphere.

For a modern, angular look, choose a large floor level shower tray along with a frameless glass screen. Another option is to create the look and feel of a spa by replacing the shower tray with a tiled floor, which integrates seamlessly with the rest of the bathroom. Whatever you decide, your choice of fitting will help you make the most of your daily ritual.

Two Heads are Better than One

A recent development in showers is the presence of two showerheads. Almost every luxury bathroom these days has rain-shower heads, also called ceiling mount or top mount heads, along with a wall mounted sprayer as a second head. Making the experience even better are additions like his and her temperature control settings, with auto memory and steam sauna options.

Have a Seat, Stay a While

No matter if your shower enclosure is big or small, most have some type of seating included. Seats can fold up to make getting in and out of the shower easier. Alternatively, if space allows, a permanent bench made of travertine (or another type of natural stone) can provide the relaxing seat needed to enjoy your luxurious getaway.

Luxurious Materials Make all the Difference

What separates a mundane renovation from a luxury one is the material used for the space. Although ceramic or porcelain tile is the standard, try dressing up the area with colourful inlays of glass tiles in distinct patterns. Better yet, use natural stone with interesting patterns and textures to give the area character. If possible, create alcoves in the shower walls for shampoo, body wash and other grooming products.

Set the Mood with Lighting

Use skylights and high windows as much as possible, to bring in the daylight. LED wall sconces and other lighting with dimmers can help to create a romantic mood. Don't forget to include elements that reflect your personality, such as unique fixtures and decorations that will make the space truly yours.

Who is your home built for? Traditionally, homes have been built for Joe and Jill Average and their family of 2.5 kids. But what happens if Jill’s elderly mother comes to live with them, Joe is disabled by a car accident and the kids leave home? More and more of us are now realising that our homes should be designed for access and use by everyone, regardless of age, lifestyle or physical condition, and that it actually pays to take Universal Design into account when renovating.
