We have completed thousands of bathroom renovations across New Zealand since 2002, and no two bathrooms are ever the same. The two main factors that have the biggest impact on budget are complexity and cost of fixtures.
The good news is that you can control these – by working with your designer/builder to fully understand the scope of each decision. By making informed decisions, you can maximise your budget to ensure a smooth and successful project that meets NZ regulations and standards.
Get a realistic understanding of the costs involved, from materials and labour to unexpected expenses, so you can plan your budget effectively.
When you want the convenience and privacy of your own bathroom, an ensuite is the answer. The key is designing the ensuite bathroom to get everything you need in a more compact space without making it look cramped.
An ensuite (French for "in the room") bathroom is an attached bathroom built adjacent to a master or other bedroom. For a growing family, an ensuite bathroom is an ideal solution for greater privacy and convenience on busy work and school mornings.
Contemporary bathrooms are truly an oasis of comfort, quality, design and pampering. Features you expect in a modern bathroom include larger glass and tile showers, glorious free standing bathtubs and subtle lighting.
Classic bathrooms capture the essence of bygone eras without foregoing today’s advances in bathroom technology. Perfect for enhancing the character of your villa, bungalow or art deco home.

We have renovated bathrooms for costs ranging from $18,000 to $40,000+. The key driver in how much the bathroom renovation costs is what products and finishes you choose.
For example you can pay $700 for a shower cubicle, to over $3,000 for a tiled and glass frameless shower.
Equally you will pay $250/m2 for tiled flooring with a waterproof membrane, but only $85/m2 for a good vinyl floor.
A typical bathroom renovation will take between 5 and 15 week days, or 3 weeks, of onsite work based on being on the same footprint. If extensive tiling is required this will take 3 days as will plastering and painting. Additional building work creating a new bathroom footprint would likely be additional.
If a consent is required this will take 2-5 weeks to go through council based on the extent of the changes.
What flooring is best in bathrooms is dependent on what your key requirements are.
Vinyl flooring offers the best combination of low cost and great waterproofing properties.
Tile flooring is aesthetically popular and the tile itself has excellent waterproofing qualities.
Sanded and varnished timber floorbaords are also a suitable solution.
No consents are required for bathroom renovations that are "like for like" and don't include additional fixtures or waterproofing under tiles.
Conversley a building consent is required when additional fixtures are being added, structural changes are being made or waterproofing membranes are being added.
This is a frequently asked question. If the property is a single bathroom dwelling then removing the bath will take out a portion of the potential buyers when it comes to selling. But if you are intending to live in the property for the next 15+ years then do what works for you as quite likely it will be time to renovate again when you come to sell.
Without doubt we are seeing more and more wall hung vanities, often with wall mounted “towers” to compliment/add storage capacity. Setting aside whatever your aesthetic preference may be the wall hung vanities are great options for small bathrooms as opening the floor up gives the illusion of a bigger bathroom. An added bonus is the ease of cleaning!
Whilst each home owners needs/likes are different, one thing we encourage you to consider is the benefits of your toilet being separate to your shower/bath/vanity. The main reason for this is simply it enables dual usage, especially with the advent of stylish minimalistic hand basins to go into the toilet room.
Clearly space availability will be a big driver here however today's product range enables us to make showers of different sizes and shapes to fit in quite small rooms. The other driver here is mobility – are we getting to a point where climbing in and out of a bath to have a shower is getting beyond us. Wet areas and additional bathroom design elements should be considered in these situations.
