New ideas on what to do with your laundry

Sep 25, 2024

Once upon a time, doing the laundry used to be such a time-consuming chore that it warranted its own room. Not any more. Today, labour-saving devices have made the laundry an embarrassment, relegated to hall cupboards and the corners of garages. We look at the latest ideas on beautifying and organising your laundry space.

This neat corner laundry unit would be great if you have space for it – and good ventilation. Because laundries have almost become after-thoughts in modern home design, people often forget that washing machines and dryers give off lots of warm, moist air – which mould and bacteria love.

The perfect laundry space needs plenty of light and air to keep mould at bay. If you have the space for a laundry room, we at Pzazz Building can help you turn it into a functional yet aesthetically pleasing environment like this. But if you think the space would be better used as another bedroom, home office or studio, let us help you make the transformation and find alternatives for your laundry.

Because kitchens must also be well-lit, -plumbed and -ventilated, your kitchen can be a good alternative place to locate your laundry. This one even has a pull-out ironing board so you can catch up with a spot of ironing while you’re cooking. But you’ll need to have space and having all those appliances on display in the kitchen isn’t such a good look.

So hide them! This is the same space, but with the washer and dryer artfully concealed in the kitchen cabinets.

There’s only one problem with the new super-compact integrated laundries – they don’t have the space for a tub for washing clothes or a bench for sorting and folding them. That’s where a concealed alcove in your kitchen can be handy, as the photo below shows.

Unobtrusively hidden behind bifold doors, this mini-laundry has room for everything you need.

From a functional point of view, bathrooms and laundries can work well together, too. But if the idea of looking out from your shower or bath at your washing machine doesn’t appeal, we recommend creating a semi-concealed space for the laundry. This one is particularly smart because the slats in the wooden doors hide the tub and appliances, but allow air to pass through freely so you don’t have to open the doors while using them.

Need a handy spot for your laundry basket but don’t want to air your dirty laundry? Try hiding the baskets away in an elegant cabinet like this.

Did you catch last week’s Love It or List It Australia episode? Homeowners Brett & Anita tasked show hosts with presenting two options – find a new ‘bigger’ home that would better fit their family, or undergo renovations to re imagine their existing home in a way that works for them. From a betting perspective, it felt like the new home option was a sure thing – their home seemed far too small and cramped with a bigger home sounding like the obvious solution. Their problems with their space were some of the most common issues we hear – lack of flow, wasted space, lack of natural light, and the dreaded toilet / bathroom directly off the living room. Designer Neale Whitaker of team ‘Love It’ uses his expertise and experience to make key changes to the floor plan that remedy the above issues and completely transforms the feeling of the house – and even more impressive, he does so without extending the footprint! Adding skylights, reworking entry points, and optimizing storage spaces are just some of the tools used to transform their existing home into the space they always dreamed it could be! And although team ‘List It’ put up some strong contenders’, team ‘Love It’ took the win and won us over for good.
