Set Your Mood with a Colour Palette

A master bedroom should be a place of sanctuary and a canvas to express your style without accommodating the varying wants, needs and tastes of everyone else in the home. Some folks look for a relaxing zen-like space filled with neutral tones and natural finishes. Others find joy and invigoration in the bright and eclectic aesthetic. Or maybe you have an affinity for purple, green or any other colour of the rainbow – and power to you! Challenge yourself to explore using tools like Pinterest and Instagram – collect and curate images of spaces you love and use that to build out a colour pallet as the basis of your master bedroom renovation.

Embrace the Bedscape

Bedscaping is the art of curating a dreamy and aesthetically pleasing bed and surrounding area. It encapsulates not only the usual bed linens, bed frame and headboard but also nearby finishes, décor, lighting and furniture such as nightstands. Your bedscape is typically the focal point of your room and as such deserves attention and care. An easy way to start is to pick out a solid colour duvet cover that works with your colour pallete then build out from there adding and layering textures, colours and patterns. And remember the process isn’t all about adding to, sometimes less is more and removing visual clutter or literal clutter can make a world of difference.

Built-ins for the Win

Bedrooms are often sacrificed to give us larger living areas. This can lead to small or irregularly shaped rooms. Having built-in furniture custom made for these rooms makes furnishing and organising the space so much easier and add a luxury feel to the space. Great ways to include built-in furniture into your master bedroom include cupboards, shelving units, a desk or even a window seat. To take it to the next level use integrated lighting in these zones to spotlight décor or add to the ambience of the space and set the mood.

Incorporate Art - and not just on the wall!

As the saying goes beauty is in the eye of the beholder – so don’t limit yourself in what you consider art. It can be the traditional painting on the wall or it could be a beautiful rug, a funky lamp or a statement headboard. Find something that sparks joy and inspires you and be willing to invest a little more on a hero piece – sure it may be more than you would typically spend on a light fixture but if its art too and the centrepiece that the rest of the design flows on from its worthwhile.

Make it Comfortable

Sounds obvious but it’s easy to go all in on the look and just hope it turns out comfy too. But creating a comfortable space takes thought and intention. The ideal master bedroom has good temperature control, fashionable and functional window coverings, a lighting system that adapts with how you use the room, a cosy seat or sofa for relaxing and last but not least comfortable high-quality bedding and mattress.

Who is your home built for? Traditionally, homes have been built for Joe and Jill Average and their family of 2.5 kids. Did you catch last week’s Love It or List It Australia episode? Homeowners Brett & Anita tasked show hosts with presenting two options – find a new ‘bigger’ home that would better fit their family, or undergo renovations to re imagine their existing home in a way that works for them. From a betting perspective, it felt like the new home option was a sure thing – their home seemed far too small and cramped with a bigger home sounding like the obvious solution. Their problems with their space were some of the most common issues we hear – lack of flow, wasted space, lack of natural light, and the dreaded toilet / bathroom directly off the living room. Designer Neale Whitaker of team ‘Love It’ uses his expertise and experience to make key changes to the floor plan that remedy the above issues and completely transforms the feeling of the house – and even more impressive, he does so without extending the footprint! Adding skylights, reworking entry points, and optimizing storage spaces are just some of the tools used to transform their existing home into the space they always dreamed it could be! And although team ‘List It’ put up some strong contenders’, team ‘Love It’ took the win and won us over for good.
