How often do you hear this from people who have just had their home fully renovated and extended? The owners of this home in New Plymouth wanted to add a second lounge, a master bedroom with a fully tiled ensuite, a new laundry and a new kitchen with a functional butler’s pantry. They chose Pzazz Building’s Taranaki affiliate, Isiah Reynolds , and his team to complete the whole project.
Isiah’s passion for building and renovation and his focus on achieving the best results for his clients is obvious from when you first meet him, but he has a relaxed and easy approach with clients.
“The smiles on clients’ faces when you initially visit them to discuss their project and the excitement of the first day’s work through to the final smile as you say the last thank you when the project is completed – that’s what gets you up every day,” he says.
It takes careful planning and execution to make sure that the smiles remain throughout the whole project. Renovating and extending a home while the homeowners are still living there can be stressful and disruptive. But that’s where Isiah’s experience, planning and coordination skills and genuine feeling for people’s needs come into their own.
Here are his tips for a successful whole-home transformation:
1. Think holistically
“One of the benefits of a whole-home renovation is that you can create a consistent style and layout throughout your entire home, rather than fitting in and compromising around existing styles and layout,” says Isiah. “It’s an amazing opportunity to develop a design concept that works for your tastes, needs and lifestyle. Fortunately, Pzazz Building has an innovative tool to help you create the right concept and actually ‘walk through’ your project before construction even begins – our exclusive 3D Design Video Service.”
2. Consider your home’s structure and utilities
“Although the sky’s the limit when it comes to whole-home re-designs, it can be expensive to move areas such as kitchens and bathrooms where new plumbing and electrical services are required,” says Isiah. “It can also be costly to remove structural walls. That’s why we often recommend that our clients design the non-structural and unplumbed parts of their home around those areas and walls. It’s called smart renovation.”
3. Think ahead
Too many homeowners fail to take into account that their needs and lifestyles will change over the years – and that the ideal renovation design should take this into consideration if they want to avoid having to make changes in the future.
“You may want your baby’s room to be next to yours now, but what happens when they’re older and they – and you – want more privacy?” explains Isiah. “On the other side of the coin, if you’re planning to retire in your home, ageing-in-place becomes a consideration. Everything that is important to you now may not work in ten or fifteen years’ time.”
4. Complete your project in phases
With Isiah’s style of meticulous planning, it’s often possible to remain in your home while your project is under way. But although it is essential to plan the entire project out before work starts, the best way to execute the plan is in stages that take into account the household’s needs while work is under way.
“We make sure we listen to our clients and understand their way of life before we start,” says Isiah. “The last thing we want to do is cause stress and disrupt their lives.”
5. Get expert advice
Hopefully at this point it is obvious that Pzazz Building professionals like Isiah are good at what they do – and they genuinely care about their clients.
