Turn your home into a work of art

How to turn your home into a work of art

By art we don’t necessarily mean paintings on the wall. There are all sorts of ways to add creative flair to your home. Here are some of them.

Spouting like sculpture

1. Turn ordinary home fixtures into the extraordinary

Who would have thought that plain old spouting could be turned into an art form? Certainly the owners of this traditional home in Britain did, extending out their guttering and positioning their downpipe like a piece of sculpture away from the wall.

Love the curved bookcase

Here’s another example where an ordinary bookshelf has become an extraordinary piece of wall art. We like the wavy lampshade, too.

New Zealand artwork in home

2. Invest in some art

We’re big fans of New Zealand art and artists. This home out of The Block New Zealand 2017 features a painting by Raglan artist Sam Mathers on the wall at left of this photo. We’d be grateful if anyone can tell us who the creator of the other artwork is.

Home with New Zealand flavour

Although Andy Warhol wasn’t a New Zealand painter, his Three Cows with Flowers print helps to give this home a distinctly Kiwi flavour. As do the timber ceilings, floor and furniture and the sheepskin draped over the coach in the living area.
Art in the bathroom

Art in the bathroom? No way! But this bathroom not only has a piece of art on the wall, it has turned the old freestanding bathtub into a sculpture by mounting it on a plinth.

Furniture as art

3. Get furniture that doubles as art

Furniture doesn’t have to be strictly functional. A chair doesn’t have to be simply a piece of furniture to sit down on – it can also be a beautiful design statement in its own right. And who says a coffee table has to be oval or rectangular?

Rejuvenating old junk

4. Turn your old junk into a work of art

We love a British show on Choice TV, Money for Nothing, in which Sarah Moore saves old furniture and other household items from being dumped at the tip, transforms them into bespoke and valuable pieces, then returns the profits back to the people who threw the items away.
Express your own sense of style

5. Express yourself with your own style

This may not be your style, but who cares? The owner of this home has taken what was once a pretty bland living room and given vent to his or her own creativity with a neon sign, some prints, a chandelier and lots of what look like faux-fur coats draped over the furniture. At least it’s not boring!

You'll find that your local Pzazz Building owner isn't boring either, offering you ideas, inspirations and advice on turning your home into a work of art with a beautiful renovation or extension.
